ABOUT MÖLKKY

Mölkky is a very popular Finnish outdoor throwing game.
This game of wooden skittles is similar to several other games of its kind played throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. Mölkky is suitable for the whole family and you can play it outside wherever you please.

How to play

1. Players: two or more
2. Place the numbered skittles (1-12) four meters away from the throwing spot in a close group
3. Draw the throwing order of the players
4. Each player throws the Mölkky skittle at the numbered skittles. Using only underarm throws.

If you knock one skittle down, your score is the number marked on the fallen skittle. If you knock more than one skittle down, your score is the total number of fallen skittles. E.g. if you knock 3 skittles down, your score is 3 points regardless of the numbers marked on the skittles. If you miss all the skittles three times in a row you are out of the game.

Before the turn goes to the next player, set all the skittles up in exactly the same place they fell. Do not move them. The winner is the player who first reaches exactly 50 points. If you score more than 50 points your score goes down to 25 points.

National and World Championships tournaments

Etelä-Hämeen Nuorisoseurojen Liitto organised the first Finnish Mölkky Championship tournament in 1997. Since then the game has grown in popularity and the number of contestants have increased greatly. Until now there has been altogether nine national tournaments. The Finnish Mölkky Association has organized tournaments since 2001 when the organisation was founded. The World Championships were organized for the first time in 2004 and for the second time on August 13th 2005 with 125 teams participating in the tournament.

Suomen Mölkkyliitto – The Finnish Mölkky Association (FMA)

The Finnish Mölkky Association was founded in 2001 to promote the popularity and knowledge of Mölkky. The Finnish Mölkky Association and Etelä-Hämeen Nuorisoseurojen Liitto organize annual Finnish MölkkyChampionship and World Championship competitions.

The Finnish Mölkky Association is an organisation, which gathers both Mölkky associations of players and enthusiasts as well as local Mölkky societies under its wings. FMA supports local Mölkky societies to arrange local competitions and Mölkky events. During the last few years when Mölkky has gained its present popularity local Mölkky events have increased greatly in number.

FMA membership is open only for associations and societies. If your association is interested to become a member of FMA or you are interested to organize a local Mölkky event please contact the president of FMA for further information.
